BLaMe

Overview

Exploring Black Lives Matter, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, anti-racism, unconscious bias, discrimination, workplace training

Tunji, Martina and Carmel work for London consultancy Bonham & Page – and are all very glad to be back in the office after the COVID lockdown.

Tunji is a graduate who’s really enjoying the variety of work as a trainee solicitor, feels his opinion is valued, and is keen to make a difference to society. Martina is a manager at the company - pulling teams together to match the needs of clients and leading them on a range of projects. As a woman in the corporate workplace, she recognises gender inequality and knows she has to be tougher and push harder sometimes. But she is always fair.

Carmel is an operational strategy consultant. She feels B&P is a good company to work for, but after five years had hoped for senior promotion by now…

When Carmel challenges Martina for not putting her forward for a project she’s perfectly suited for, Martina admits that it’s because of Carmel’s ‘background’. Carmel soon discovers Martina has a history of denying black employees good positions. They’d both like Tunji’s help in the dispute. Is this a case of ‘unconscious bias’ or Institutional Racism, and whose job is it to challenge it in the workplace?

Specially created to support Diversity and Inclusion, BLaMe is an interactive Forum Theatre programme devised for performance in the workplace. Using dynamic live Forum Theatre, Arc’s scripted scenarios are opened out to the audience to direct the characters and the action of the piece in order to reach a mutual resolution.

An effective new Corporate Social Responsibility resource, BLaMe encourages its participants to:

• Understand Institutional Racism and how it manifests in the corporate world,
• Explore the inequality caused by racism,
• Discuss issues surrounding race in a safe space,
• Recognise unconscious bias and how it is used in the everyday workplace,
• Reflect on and examine their own behaviours in (and out of) the workplace,
• Take individual and group responsibility by encouraging Personal Action Plans,
• Look at the lack of racial diversity in city corporates,
• Change the narrative from office through to boardroom, with a view to strategically implementing Culture Change,
• Nurture workforces built on mutual respect, equal opportunities and inclusive engagement.

BLaMe is available as a two-hour, COVID-flexible, live theatre piece delivered by Arc's professional team of facilitators and actors, for performance live on site or virtually online.
